FAQ

  • Why $2400? What does it cover?
$2400 is the standard amount that we issue for each student. It is intended to cover all of that student's expenses that are required to participate in advance and rank in the same way that other students do. Any funds above and beyond the monthly fee for classes is meant to cover the cost of any required uniforms testing fees equipment or tournament fees that are necessary for the funded student to progress, and to advance in rank, as normal. Our participating Guardians Network Member Schools may choose to use the remainder to support their school in any way that they see fit - including using it to fund additional students or choosing to donate it back to Joni's Angels - but they also must agree to pay for any required costs involved in that students advancement during the scholarship year ( that extends above and beyond the $2400 award).
  • How does the Joni's Angels Martial Arts Program work and where does the money go? ?
We provide $2, 400 scholarships to select Guardians Network Member Schools to pay for qualifying poverty-level youth students to attend their classes for one year (January 1st through December 31st). Applicants fill out applications at the participating Guardians Network Member School that they wish to attend. Applications are screened by both the participating school and Joni's Angels before a decision is made about including the applicant in the program. If the application is approved by both the participating Guardians Network Member School and Joni's Angels, the application is time-and-date stamped and the Applicant is informed that their application has been approved and they have been placed on the waiting list. Scholarships are awarded on a "first-come, first-served" basis until the funds for the year are depleted. Scholarship awards are announced to the participating Guardians Network Member School in November. The funding is transferred to the participating Guardians Network Member School in December, when we also notify the Applicant - just in time to make the Holidays a little brighter.
  • What qualifies a student to be funded by Joni's Angels
To qualify for funding through the Joni's Angels Martial Arts Scholarship Program, you must meet the following requirements: 1. Your family income level must be at or below the Federal Poverty Level Income Amounts set by the U.S. Government. 2. Older than six years of age or the lowest acceptable age limit set by the participation Guardians Network Member School - whichever is greater. 3. Below eighteen years of age. We do not fund classes for adults. Students who are seventeen years of age when they enter the program, but who turn eighteen before their funded year is over, will be allowed to remain in the program for the entire funded year. 4. Acceptance/approval of applicant's participation by Joni's Angels. 5. Acceptance/approval of student in program by the participating Guardians Network Member School.
  • When does a funded student "officially" leave our program?
We officially determine that a funded student is no longer a part of our program when certain circumstances are present. Those circumstances are: (1)When they are absent from attending for over 30 days without receiving written permission from BOTH the Guardians Network Member School that they are being funded through AND from Joni's Angels prior to the absence. (2) When they have violated the rules/code of conduct at the participating Guardians Network Member School and/or the participating Guardians Network Member School has determined that the student is no longer a good fit for their school for any other reason. (3) When the funded student and/or their responsible Parent or Guardian has violated the rules/code of conducted Joni's Angels has established for participation and funding through our program ( especially, but not limited to, when misrepresentations of fact are discovered on the qualifying application). Joni's Angels reserves the right to remove any qualifying student or Guardian Network member school from the program for any conduct or behavior that is determined to be reasonable and just cause for removal from our program (by our Board of Directors via a two-thirds majority vote). (4) When the funded year ends and Joni's Angels last the ability to fund the student for the following year (or if at the end of the funded year, the circumstances for the funded student have changed to the point that they no longer qualify for our program). We do try to keep the dedicated young people that we fund involved in our program, and those who are already in our program get first consideration when it comes to the distribution of the next year's scholarships. In the event that our funding efforts don't raise enough money to fund to everyone in our program again in the following year, those that we don't have the ability to fund in one year we'll be the first to be considered when more funding becomes available.
  • What if the student quits during the funded year?
Students who quit attending the classes that we have paid for - or whose attendance slips below a level deemed acceptable by the Instructor of the class that they are enrolled in) after they have received funding through Joni's Angels have effectively also robbed another young person of the opportunity that they have chosen to squander and may be permanently removed from the program. Participants who are permanently removed from the Joni's Angels Martial Arts Scholarship Program are also disqualified from applying for future funding. The participating Guardians Network Member School involved in such an instance has three choices to decide from in determining what to do with the remainder of the funding that they have received for the student that has been so removed: (1) They can keep the remainder of the money, with our blessing, to use to help pay for expenses and support their business in whatever way they see fit. Our Guardians Network Member Schools represent the VERY BEST of what the Art has to offer, and we want to do all that we can to help them stay strong. (2) They can use it to start another qualifying student in the program for the remainder of the year. We STRONGLY recommend this option. It not only starts helping another young person right away, but it insures that the NEW student that is selected to participate for the remainder of that year will automatically continue to be funded by Joni's Angels in the following year - provided that they still qualify for our program and the funding is available to do so. (3) They can elect to donate the remainder of the funds back to Joni's Angels as a charitable contribution.
